Time Trial #6: And the winners are...!
Finally, fall has arrived. Cooler temperatures and a slight breeze were a welcomed change for the last of the six time trials, October 26th. With the overall winners almost certainly determined, a record number of volunteers participated as moral support for sixteen riders. The most improved award winners had yet to be determined.
Gary Blackall made his final appearance and once again rode away with the fastest mens time, 13:58. Rob Roller, fresh off participating in the Clermont Ironman and still in the midst of Ironman Florida training, Rob used the time trial for another training opportunity and rode a consistent 14:29. To the amazement of all, Christopher Irvin has whipped himself into some kind of shape and rode a 14:25! More than a one-minute improvement from Christophers first time trial, sealed the most improved award for this FSU cycling team member and nursing student.
Lucinda Thomas continues to improve and rode her best time to date, 18:03. Mara Fair, having wrapped up the womens overall award, chose to go for a run and be a great volunteer, rather than ride this last time trial. The fastest single female time remained in the hands of KC Glymph, with a 16:12. Cathy McCarty produced her second fastest time to date with a 17:33 and finalized the womens most improved.
Three different methods were used to calculate the most improved awards. This was a very close event with some notable improvements, especially from Doc Dunn (1:07 improvement) and Barbara McNeal (37 second improvement). Dana Stetson managed the most marked slow down, increasing his time by 44 seconds!
To all the volunteers, this event would not have been possible without you. An extra special thanks goes out to Rick Lindstrom, who tirelessly worked at every time trial and provided instruction on coordinating such an event. Were it not for Rick and Randall Smiths encouragement, we would never have organized this event.
For the 58 riders that participated, thank you. We were not sure what to expect in the beginning and how exciting it was to have all of you show such huge interest and support. We raised $200 to pay for the "first-timer triathlete" awards.
Finally, and most important, thank you Jim Olmstead of The Great Bicycle Shop for your donation toward awards.
See everyone in the spring!
