First Annual Alan C. Sundberg Memorial 5K Run

The First Annual Alan C. Sundberg, Jr. Memorial 5K Run got off to a fantastic start as approximately 100 runners and walkers showed up to support new Race Director Bill Sundberg as he honored his brother in the best way he knew how. A challenging course through the park where Alan used to work and along part of the Overstreet property produced a lot of grumbles from those hoping for an easy course. But when all was said and done, it was agreed that the weather was beautiful, the cause was noble, and who cares about fast times anyway, right? Yeah, right!

Overall winners were Dwayne Maddron (18:12) and Betty Lewis (21:28) followed by second overall and, consequently, Master’s winners, Paul Hoover (18:29) and Mary Jean Yon (22:12).

Bill’s goal of making more people aware of the dangers of skin cancer was also achieved as long lines of participants waited after the race as Dr. Armand Cognetta and others from the Florida Skin Cancer Foundation gave out free advice, thorough screenings and lots of sun screen.

No doubt, all Sundbergs were smiling as the festivities drew to a close. Hope to see you there next year!
