Athlete of the Week nominations: April 23

By Gary Droze - Maclay Coach

GIRLS: Rogers (?, Jefferson County) the top area small school thrower cemented her status with 1A district 4 wins in the Discus (PR 119-6.5) and shot (36-4).

BOYS: Danny Pellegrino (12, Maclay) the team captain led Maclay to its 4th consecutive district title. Pellegrino won the pole vault (school record 14-2) and 110 hurdles (15.41) , placed second in the 300 hurdles (40.69), and ran lead leg on the 1st place 4×400 relay (3:28). Charles Davis (?, FL High) Won the long and triple jumps (21-10, 42-6) and placed second in the 100 and 200 (11.12, 22.84) in the Class 1A district 4 meet.

OTHER NOTES: Class 1A Region 1 Championships at FSU this Thursday (4/26) 1-9pm. Major matchups between real State Title contenders: FL High girls are clearly the top 1A squad in Florida right now, with the ability to score in 11 events, but they won’t get to completely coast through regions, as Chiles & Maclay have solid performers in the distance events…2000 Boys’ State Champs Maclay will have their hands full with Port St Joe, last year’s 3rd place team. The Sharks bring back their entire big-scoring field event cadre, while Maclay has graduated its top miler, sprinter, and vaulter from last year’s squad. Wakulla competes in 2A regions this week. Standout sprinter Lakendra Cunningham should advance in whatever events she chooses! Large schools are also scheduled to begin post-season qualifying, with districts this Thursday-Friday. Look for Godby boys and Rickards Girls to dominate their districts.
