Athlete of the Week nominations: May 7

By Gary Droze - Maclay Coach

GIRLS: Karla Savery (9, Chiles) Cleared a personal best & school record 10-0 for second place in the Class 1A State pole vault, helping to clinch an overall 4th place for her school team. Laura Lee Atkinson (10, FL High) Following an asthmatic collapse after her 6th place 400m finish at 1A State, Atkinson came roaring back to run a leg of the 3rd place 4×400 relay, helping FL High to a 3rd place overall team finish.

BOYS: Reggie Quinn (12, Port St Joe) Completely dominated the sprint events at 1A State, winning the 100m (10.97), 200m (21.96) and 400m (49.03). His performances virtually locked up the State title for the Sharks.

OTHER NOTES: Small Schools performed admirably at the Class 1A State Finals last Friday in Coral Gables. Three boys’ teams finished in the top five: Port St. Joe (1st), Maclay (3rd), and Jefferson County (5th). Likewise, three girls’ squads earned top five finishes: FLHigh (3rd), Chiles (4th), and Maclay (5th). Among larger schools, Godby’s boys stand the best chance of a high finish, as they are coming off a 1st place showing in 3A Region 1.

Thanks again to Lauren Gaddie and her support staff, as they continue to provide superb area prep track & field coverage that rivals that of the track-mad Miami scene!

NOTE: This update DOES NOT include full stats from all large school regional meets, as they are not completely posted on the internet! If I get anything from Godby’s regional meet by tonight, I’ll add it in.
