From Zack’s Corner – Camaraderie, Friendship and Sometimes Therapy

Zack Scharlepp, GWTC President,

Wow! What an awesome awards’ banquet this year. I hope all of you had the opportunity to attend, if not, I encourage you to take time to read through the presenter’s remarks for each award. The amount of time, effort, and work – with only slight complaints – that our award recipients devote to our beloved club is amazing.

While listening to Paul Guyas’ acceptance speech for Male Runner of the year, and his testimony of how he ended up where he is today, I found myself wondering how many people have found themselves in a similar situation. The camaraderie, friendship, familiar faces, and relationships built make Gulf Winds Track Club what it is; an amazing, and in some instances, life changing group. Over the three years I have been involved in the club I cannot count the times that a long run, interval workout, or Saturday morning race have served not only as great physical exercise but also a much needed mental break from the busyness that is everyday life; a brief reprieve from work and family stressors. For all those that have accompanied me and served as my unknown therapist, thank you!

For those who have not yet had the pleasure of keeping me sane, February offers a number of opportunities. The Tallahassee Marathon and Half Marathon are ready to challenge you on February 5. The hills of the half marathon promise to be as steep as always, but those Grand Prix points are not going to earn themselves. If you prefer the flat route, February has a little something for you as well. First, challenge the blistering fast course at Run for the Cookies, GWTC third Grand Prix event, on February 11. Need something even flatter? Be at St. Marks on February 18 for the Flash 6K/12k, where the only hill promises to be of the ant variety. Whatever your preference, short or long, flat or hilly, GWTC has you covered this month.
