A Flash Freeze – 2007 Flash 12K

The temperature gauge said 20 degrees when the ignition switch was turned off. It was a tough morning to be a runner and even tougher to be a volunteer. You wouldn’t know it though if you watched the 70 plus runners and 15-20 volunteers who showed up for the 2007 Flash 12K at J. Lewis Hall Park. The Flash himself made a special appearance to lead the runners out of the Park and onto the St. Marks Trail headed south. Tony Guillen and Todd Smoot eased through the first mile together at around a 6:15 pace. They continued side by side as they made the first turnaround and headed toward Capital Circle on the St. Marks Trail. The pace had dropped significantly as they ran back past the park on their way to the trail head. Todd Smoot, from Valdosta, cranked it down more as he slowly, but decisively, pulled away to win in a time of 44:58, just over a six minute per mile average. Tony Guillen continued to drop his pace as well finishing in 45:43 for second place. Kim Likens ran her own race to win the women’s title in 52:22, a two minute plus margin over Mary Ann Bullard who grabbed second place with a time of 54:44. It was the 19th time Joe Dexter has directed this race
