Maclay/Lincoln/Chiles cross country meet

September 15, 2001

A special meet was scheduled at Maclay High School this morning after the Pre-state meet north of Tampa was cancelled do to Gabrielle. Gary Droze provided this report.

Course: 3 miles, mostly flat, three short hills. Conditions: cool and breezy.

GIRLS’ RACE SUMMARY Kara Newell (Maclay) led from the gun with very even mile splits of 5:58 and 12:00. She gradually pulled away, but Zita Magloire (Chiles) closed the gap from 26 to 17 seconds over the last mile. Maclay edged Chiles on the depth of their 5th & 6th runners (Betsy McQueen & MC Willis), who held off Chiles’ 4th & 5th (Meredith Pederson & Layne Maifarth). Team results: Maclay 31, Chiles 38, Lincoln 68.

BOYS’ RACE SUMMARY When Maclay’s number 2 runner (Ross McMillan) dropped out at the mile, Chiles had an opportunity to steal a win from Maclay on the Marauders’ home course. The Chiles squad nearly pulled off the upset, missing by only 3 points as numerous Chiles and Maclay runners set personal bests on the unusually dry course. Ryan Deak (Maclay) closed with a 2:21 last half mile to set a course record of 15:04. Team Results: Maclay 30, Chiles 33, Lincoln 97.
