Run for the Cookies a popular event

Hear ye! Hear ye! One of the most enjoyable annual community events is just around the corner.
The Run for the Cookies 5K Run and One Mile Run will be held on a fast, flat course at Tallahassee Community College on Feb. 24th at 8:45 a.m.
This popular exercise event was started several years ago by Girl Scout Troop 170 at Trinity Catholic School. Scout father and Gulf Winds Track Club member Tom Perkins volunteered to help the girls organize a 5K race as a service project.
Various scout troops have since taken on the race as a service project each year. Proceeds have been donated to charitable organizations and to the Erica Davey Wider Opportunities Scholarship Fund, which benefits the Girl Scouts of the Apalachee Bend.
This year, Scout Troop 636 hopes to raise sufficient funds to build a new cabin at the Girl Scout Camp for All Seasons. The camp, located west of Tallahassee on Highway 20, is a beautiful nature camp widely used by north Florida Scouts and by other organizations as well.
The 5K Run and One Mile Run are open to everyone, including walkers. All 5K entrants receive a race tank top and a box of Girl Scout cookies. One Mile runners receive a tank top and a goodie bag. The Girl Scout troop with the most entrants in the One Mile run will win $10 in Cookie Bucks for each participant.
But many runners will leave with even more. Male and female 5K runners placing first, second, and third in their respective age groups will be awarded boxes of delicious Girl Scout cookies in lieu of trophies. Overall age group finishers in the One Mile run will also win a box of the delightful morsels!
Special awards will also be presented to winners in the Clydesdale division (males over 200 pounds, females over 150 pounds), and to the first place TCC student and TCC faculty/staff participant.
Race flyers are available at Sports Beat, and pre-registration must be mailed no later than Feb. 18. On-site registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Feb. 24 at the Lifetime Sports Complex behind Tallahassee Community College. Bring the whole family to TCC for some exercise and great cookies.
