YOU CAN’T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT, BUT…

Gordon Cherr,

Sitting here in the kitchen drinking hot coffee, looking at this wall of water dropping from the grey morning sky. Measuring my dwindling incentive. Got soaked yesterday on the run, got real chilled for a few miles where I turned into the wind near the top of Sunset Mountain. Shivering hard for a mile or two, then warming up as the road dropped down and behind some trees, out of the wind.

Ugh, I had forgotten about the biting wind up high. I won’t forget again.

We are predicted to have between 6-20″ of rain over the next 2-3 days. Lord knows, I might not have gone out on a morning like this a few years ago. There was plenty of time, you know. But I am not sure how much time now. I mean I don’t dwell on the age thing much, it is largely as matter of quality and quantity these days. Just getting out there is so much more meaningful now. Maybe it is the dark morning light speaking, but there are only so many round ups left.

Carpe Diem friends, don’t let them slip away.

I know that it is hard. Running is hard. Commitment is hard. Dedication is hard. The weather can be hard. The couch is not so very difficult.

Jimmy Dugan: This is chickenshit, Dottie, if you want to go back to Oregon and make a hundred babies, great, I’m in no position to tell anyone how to live. But sneaking out like this, quitting, you’ll regret it for the rest of your life. Baseball is what gets inside you. It’s what lights you up, you can’t deny that.

Dottie Hinson: It just got too hard.

Jimmy Dugan: It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it. The hard… is what makes it great.

(A League of Their Own)

So, after all the uphill yesterday, the rain, the wind, the cold, the depressing grey skies, wet feet, cold to the core rotten questioning and wanting to quit feeling, the run took on a new hue. I raced the clouds down the mountain and home, and dreamed about what tomorrow might bring. The Rolling Stones provided insight:

You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometimes
You just might find
You get what you need

Yeah, Baby, it looks like a fine morning to run. I am heading out right now.
