Athlete of the Week nominations: April 30

GIRLS: Emily Kohler (10, FL High) Led her team to the Class 1A Region 1 title with second place efforts in the triple jump (35-0) and 400m (61.26) a win in the LJ (16-10.75) and a superb anchor leg on the winning 4×400 (4:08)

BOYS: Hughes (?, NFC) Unleashed the Big Bend’s top long jump (22-9) to win the Class1A Region 1 title. Chester Udell (12, Wewa) After just missing qualifying for 1A State in the 1600m with a PR 4:28, he came back to run a PR 2:01 800m for third and a berth at the State meet.

OTHER NOTES: The Big Bend will be well represented at this Friday’s Class 1A State Meet, with FL High, Chiles, and Maclay going in as the top three girls’ teams on paper, and Port St Joe and Maclay likely to place first and third, respectively. Jefferson County is also a good bet to earn a top five showing among boys’ squads.
