Take the time to nominate good candidates for the Annual Wards

Zack Scharlepp, GWTC President,

The 2017 awards season is in full swing. Tinsel town kicked things off last month with the annual Emmy awards hosted by noted comic and political commentator Steven Colbert. The Music industry crowns the best of their best at the American Music Awards on November 19, 2017. Come December and January if you tune to a broadcast station you are sure to find someone being given an award for any manner of achievement, real or imagined. While I have my own opinions, which I will spare you, on the proliferation of “awards” being granted by every academy, agency, board, or guild, one award ceremony everyone should be sure to attend is the Annual Gulf Winds Track Club Awards Ceremony, hosted by the best emcee in the business, Bill McGuire. As everyone knows, in order to have an awards ceremony there have to be nominees. That is where you come in.

The Club awards nine annual awards. Each award winner is selected by the Awards Committee based on nominations received by our membership. To nominate someone for an award, go to: https://www.gulfwinds.org/Awards/2017/AnnualAwardNominationForm_2017.pdf and fill out the nominations form. The nominations form can also be found on the GWTC page under the News and Events page heading.

The nine categories are:

Male and Female Runner of the Year – award seeks to honor those that “have served as models for all of us in their competitive spirit, their continuing devotion to the sport, and their support and encouragement of their fellow runners, both individually and as members of Gulf Winds.”

Male and Female Triathlete of the Year – This award will be given to both a male and female GWTC triathlete, active in the club, whose love of triathlon is demonstrated not only in competition, but also in commitment, service & inspiration.

Community Award – Awarded “to an organization or individual who over a period of years, through financial or other contributions, has supported running in the community at large.”

Bill Lott Volunteer Award – Awarded “to a person deemed representative of those club members who contribute hours of time assisting in club activities and who often go unrecognized by the club at large.”

Race Director of the Year – Awarded “to a GWTC member who has taken a major responsibility in production of quality events, especially those favored by GWTC runners, whether by initiation or direction of the event or by coordination of a major aspect of such event.”

Cleveland-Caldwell Advancement of the Sport – “The award is given in recognition of those who make significant contributions to the advancement of the sport, whether through research, education or some other area of expertise.”

GWTC Hall of Fame – Individuals who have brought respect to the Gulf Winds Track Club through their contributions, activities, and running accomplishments, and who have played a major role in shaping the ideals of the club are recognized when inducted into our Hall of Fame.

I made my nominations, have you made yours?
