Regions at Sunny Hill Farm

by Kristin Sweeney, November 14, 2012

Chiles worked hard to prepare the course for last weekend’s races, and their labor was definitely worth it. Their course at Sunny Hill Farm was perfect for the 1A, 2A, and 3A Region 1 meets. Thank you to everyone in the community who helped with this race and who will be helping this week at the state meet.

Early in the morning, the 3A girls meet started down the opening hill. Finishing with a solid win, Rachel Givens had another strong race with her time of 18:32. Ashton McMurray was fifteenth (19:23). They led the Lady Timberwolves to a second place finish, which qualifies them for the state meet this weekend. Although her team did not advance Leon’s Autumn Wable ran a personal record time of 19:18, and this qualified her for the state meet individually! Meanwhile, the guys took their turn on the scenic course. Leading his team, Leon’s Sukhi Khosla dipped under the 16-minute barrier with his time of 15:53 for third place. Khosla’s teammate, Will Henderson (16:04), finished seventh. After barely losing to Chiles at the district meet, Leon managed to finish second in front of third place Chiles at the Region meet. These teams will get to have one final competition at the state meet. Unfortunately, there were not any state qualifiers in either of the 2A meets. In the 1A meet, Maclay’s ladies were led by Kristin Sweeney in second (19:57), Caroline Willis in seventh (20:37), and Elizabeth Santoro in twelfth (21:06). Beating the third place team by 1 point, the Lady Marauders were second. Last but not least, the 1A guys charged the course. Jack Rutledge (16:58) and Connor Daughton (17:00) gave strong third and fourth place performances, and Travis covert was seventh (17:10). Alex Artecona earned fifteenth (17:27), and together they brought home the first place trophy.

Overall, Tallahassee performed well last Saturday. However, this Saturday, the State Meet will be right here at the Apalachee Regional Park. Expect even faster times and even more exciting races. As a senior, it is quite exciting to finish my last cross-country season in my hometown! Be sure to come on out and support us!
